Coming soon: Zoe Kean on ‘Assassin’s Apprentice’

6-7pm, Tuesday 24 February 2026 at Five Leaves Left, 41 Victoria St Hobart

What Writers Read will return in 2026 as science writer and communicator extraordinaire, Zoe Kean, talks with Jane Rawson about classic fantasy novel, Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice. In book one of the Farseer Trilogy (which both Zoe and The Times warn is ‘as addictive as morphine’), ‘The kingdom of the Six Duchies is on the brink of civil war when news breaks that the crown prince has fathered a bastard son and is shamed into abdication. The child’s name is Fitz, and he is despised. To be useful to the crown, Fitz is trained as an assassin…but his tutor is determined to kill him’.

Zoe Kean is an award-winning science writer with a focus on evolution, ecology, and the environment; former assistant director of the Beaker Street Festival; an MEAA Freelance Journalist of the Year and ABC Radio Hobart producer. Her book, Why are we like this?, is an evolutionary search for answers to life’s big questions.
